There are common elements to many of these scams. Scammers often exploit fears and threaten you with arrest or legal action.

Scammers also pose as federal employees, like Social Security or other government employees, calling you with made up stories, like claiming there’s a problem with your Social Security number (SSN) or your benefits. They may even claim your SSN is linked to a crime.

Don’t let scammers catch you unaware of their malicious tricks and schemes. Scammers are counting on you being uninformed of their deceptive tactics so that you will fall prey to their sneaky tricks. Don’t let that happen!

Do you know how to spot a government imposter scam?

Knowing how to identify potential scammers will help safeguard your personal information.

National Slam the Scam Day is Thursday, March 7, 2024

National Slam the Scam Day is an initiative created in 2020 to raise public awareness to combat Social Security-related scams. In 2022, it expanded to include other government imposter scams as reported losses from consumers climbed to more than $446 million in 2021. According to the Federal Trade Commission, reported losses for 2022 were nearly $509 million. The SSA and OIG partners with other government agencies, non-profit organizations, and the private sector to increase awareness about how to spot government imposter scams and avoid becoming a victim.

Recognizing a scammer

In a government imposter scam, someone claims to be an SSA, or another government employee, and may ask for personal information, demand payment, or make threats. These scams primarily use the telephone, but scammers may also use email, text messages, social media, or U.S. mail.

Some scammers will even label their incoming calls to appear on your caller-ID that they are SSA, IRS, police departments, or other government agencies that a consumer may interpret as official - yet they are still FAKE.

BEWARE!

IF YOU DO OWE MONEY TO SOCIAL SECURITY (OR THE IRS)

If you truly do owe money, the SSA or IRS will mail you a letter with payment options and information regarding appeal rights. They will only accept payments electronically through Pay.gov, Online Bill Pay, or physically by check or money order at their offices.

Real government officials will NEVER:

  • Threaten arrest or legal action against you unless you immediately send money
  • Promise to increase your benefits or resolve a problem if you pay a fee or move your money into a protected account
  • Require payment with gift cards, prepaid debit cards, wire transfer, Internet currency, or by mailing cash
  • Try to gain your trust by providing fake “documentation,” false “evidence,” or the name of a real government official
  • Call you to ask for any passcodes, your social security number, PIN numbers

Tips for spotting scams is a critical component - it’s important to keep consumers aware of current trends and past behavior patterns of the scammers. SSA/OIG provides resources on its website and posts tips and warnings on its social media platforms. SSA/OIG urges everyone to be cautious of any contact supposedly from a government agency telling you about a problem you don’t recognize.

For example, if you receive a call where the caller says ‘you are back due $5,000 in taxes’ (or any other amount), hang up! Call the IRS or appropriate agency to verify this – and DO NOT USE a phone number or link these parties may provide to you because that information is fake too, and will lead you down a nefarious path.

ALWAYS verify the correct phone numbers to call by looking them up on the internet, a phone book, old tax returns, or social security statements and verify the correct numbers to call. Senior citizens are prime targets to these scammers.
